My Country 'Tis of Thee (America)

written by Samuel Francis Smith (1831); music from "God Save the King" / "... Queen" (the British national anthem, which was first published as a Swiss military hymn in Thesaurus Musicus (1744), and has since been used by other Commonwealth realms as well as several other nations) as arranged by Thomas Arne [nb: this song, along with "Hail Columbia", served as the de facto anthem of the United States until "The Star-Spangled Banner" was officially adopted in 1931]

    My country, 'tis of thee,
    Sweet land of liberty,
    Of thee I sing;
    Land where my fathers died,
    Land of the pilgrims' pride,
    From ev'ry mountainside
    Let freedom ring!

    My native country, thee,
    Land of the noble free,
    Thy name I love;
    I love thy rocks and rills,
    Thy woods and templed hills;
    My heart with rapture thrills,
    Like that above.

    Let music swell the breeze,
    And ring from all the trees
    Sweet freedom's song;
    Let mortal tongues awake;
    Let all that breathe partake;
    Let rocks their silence break,
    The sound prolong.

    Our fathers' God to Thee,
    Author of liberty,
    To Thee we sing.
    Long may our land be bright,
    With freedom's holy light,
    Protect us by Thy might,
    Great God our King.

My Country, 'Tis of Thee

(variant)

    My country, 'tis of thee,
    Sweet land of liberty,
    Of thee I sing.
    Land where my fathers died!
    Land of the Pilgrim's pride!
    From every mountain side,
    Let freedom ring!

    My native country, thee,
    Land of the noble free,
    Thy name I love.
    I love thy rocks and rills,
    Thy woods and templed hills;
    My heart with rapture fills,
    Like that above.

    Let music swell the breeze,
    And ring from all the trees,
    Sweet freedom's song.
    Let mortal tongues awake;

    Our father's God, to Thee,
    Author of liberty,

    Great God, our King!

additional verses added to
My Country 'Tis of Thee

by Henry van Dyke

    We love thine inland seas,
    Thy groves and giant trees,
    Thy rolling plains;
    Thy rivers' mighty sweep,
    Thy mystic canyons deep,
    Thy mountains wild and steep,--
    All thy domains.

    Thy silver Eastern strands,
    Thy Golden Gate that stands
    Fronting the West;
    Thy flowery Southland fair,
    Thy North's sweet, crystal air:
    O Land beyond compare,
    We love thee best!

God Keep America

popular verse set to the same melody (ca1800)

    God keep America
    Free from tyrannic sway
    Till time shall cease
    Hush'd be the din of arms
    And all proud war's alarm;
    Follow in all her charms
    Heaven-borne peace.

    additional verse added to
    My Country 'Tis of Thee
    in celebration of Washington's centennial

      Our joyful hearts today,
      Their grateful tribute pay,
      Happy and free,
      After our toils and fears,
      After our blood and tears,
      Strong with our hundred years,
      O God, to Thee.

    verses improvised for
    Washington's inauguration
    in New York City (April 1789)

      Hail, thou auspicious day!
      For let America
      Thy praise resound.
      Joy to our native land!
      Let every heart expand,
      For Washington's at hand,
      With glory crowned.

      Thrice beloved Columbia, hail!
      Behold before the gale
      Your chief advance.
      The matchless Hero's neigh;
      Applaud him to the sky,
      Who gave you liberty,
      With gen'rous France.
