The Drill Instructor's Admonition to Basic Trainees
a parody of the Biblical passage at I Corinthians 13:11-2
When you were a civilian, you acted as a civilian would act, you
saw as a civilian, you thought as a civilian, you spoke as a
civilian, you understood as a civilian; life was sweet and fun,
the world was innocent and there was no evil; but when you become
a soldier, you must put aside civilian notions, put away civilian
things, forsake civilian ways. Even now civilians see through a
glass darkly, peering at the pretty people and places on the
other side of their drink, but soldiers come face to face with
reality; what civilians know in part, a soldier knows fully, for
even as a soldier knows, so shall he be known. Civilians prophesy
in part, but when that which is perfect is come, then that which
is in part shall be done away, and only soldiers who know the
whole truth will be left standing.
